    Saving messages

I am currently buying a new computer. I need to transfer the messages from Outlook Express on the old machine into a folder outside of OE so I can put on a disc.

I have tried compacting as instructed, but then cannot 'save as' to desktop etc..
It then says 'find folder', but this I cannot do

    Any ideas?

On the old machine, the easiest way to locate Outlook Express' email store is to ask Outlook Express. Fire it up, and then in Tools, Options, on the Maintenance tab, there's a button labeled Store Folder. Click that and it will tell you the folder containing your email folder.
navigate to that folder in explorer then either burn a copy to a cd / dvd-R or drag n drop it onto a usb flash drive.
take the usb stick, cd or dvd to the new pc. start up outlook express,
Select File, Import, Messages.... and that's about as far as i can remember but outlook should help you through the rest.

OK found a folder, when saved found were in Adobe format that then said could not open as did not know what 'dbx' suffix means. No access to internet until new machine arrives (in library at moment). Saved to disc anway, reurned to OE to find all folders vanished, so really need to read the files. New machine does not have OE, so what to do next?
    help!

You should be able to import the messages into the email client on the new machine.
Import is usually in the file menu File>Import then select the dbx files you have saved to disk.

as for email clients, if it's a new windows 7 machine it may not have outlook express installed & its had a rename to windows live mail. you could either try a free one like mozilla thunderbird, or download windows live mail from microsoft (comes free as part of registering windows 7 online - i think the online registration wizard has directions to it). If not, google windows live mail.
