Phoned today twice by a foreign-based call centre, claiming to be microsoft accredited. They wanted to show me that my computer had malware, they had information that I had picked up viruses and malware from the internet. I asked "Victoria" - who could hardly pronounce her name - what version of windows I was running. She couldn't tell me, and that was the end of that call. 1471 number withheld.
A little later "Ralph" rang, and I thought I'll string him along. He proceeded to get me to open the Event Viewer, and when it showed lots of warnings said that this was evidence of malware and virus infestation. I said oh dear how upsetting, and asked him for a phone number I could phone him back on. He wanted me to purchase software maintenance contract now, which would mean that his engineer would clear up the malware straight away. (incidentally, error messages in the Event Viewer just show your computer is plugged in. It looks impressive, but usually means nothing). I did get a website address out of him, although he said his phone number was a members only line. www dot consultpcexperts dot com.
