my websites are getting stuck !

    Help !

When I go to bring up a website like BBC news or online banking, the hourglass comes up and the green bars at the bottom of the page that show how the page is loading get stuck at one green bar. If I then do "ctrl alt delete" to bring up windows task manager to close it down, the CPU at the bottom shows up at about 90%. The macafee virus programme is running fine.

What could be wrong and how do I fix it?

Mines been playing up on and off for the past week or so. Having checked with my internet provider they were doing maintenence work which really slowed everything up to the point of distraction.
There have also been quite a few windows updates coming through too.My "genius computer whizz kid" tells me this slows thing up too but I don't believe everything he says. I'm a computer illeterate myself and blame the gremlins for anything I don't understand.

Download 'spybot' and run a check for trojans etc.

If you're using Internet Explorer (IE)... don't. Especially if its version 8 as it's not reliable yet.

I would suggest using Firefox or Safari as these are much faster, render websites properly, and Firefox is much more secure than IE.

Also, are you using other programs at the same time? It might be worth closing a few down if your CPU is struggling with certain websites. Also, if you have virus scanning software performing a scan on your computer this can severely compromise performance.

I certainly agree with using firefox, but safari is regularly compromised security-wise. As is the new google chrome browser based on safari.

Firefox is the best in terms of functionality and customising but if you want speed i would go for opera. Opera's also good as it tends to be ignored by most of the dodgy hijack/hacks that are now starting to appear for firefox as it grows in popularity.

I find the broadband connection via the secure N3 connection (using Nexphase) is appallingly bad some days, with IE frames taking ages (minutes) to come up. I suppose it has something to do with all the security stuff built in to this connection. Not surprisingly ETP is also pretty slow some days (last few days unusable) - don't know if there is a connection between these observations. Given up asking the helpdesk, either get platitudes or long investigations which take up so much of my time. My other broadband connection (the cheap one) works just fine....

Are you using mobile broadband, or a fixed line connection?

Landline, but it's fixed now. A friend came over with an anti-virus CD and got rid of 7 trojans. It's working fine again.
