    Same IP Address!

Today, on the forum, went to "Who's Online" section of forum

Pharmacy Forum UK - Who's Online

and noticed by chance that I had the same IP address as a Guest on the forum, 195.224.166.158

I was using the internet access at a shop running Pharmacy Manager. Does this mean that they (Cegedim) have numbers of people sharing the one IP address? Wouldn't this make the service much slower?

Where do you see the IP address, or is it a moderator only thing??

It's a mod thing as people can be traced from their IP address. I don't mean traced to your front door, but to the area you are in. It helps us if people say they are from Somerset and their IP bounces all around the world and finishes in Russia or wherever.....

I wouldn't worry about you having the same as someone else though, as companies (I am told) often use proxy servers and that gives people the same IP.

Maybe someone more tekky then me can advise, but that's what I have been told - by Bill Gates no less.....

Ah. Well, apparently my IP address says my Proxy (whatever that is) is in Berkshire, and my body is definitely in Lancashire. I still think it could be why its all so slow!

What's slow - this site? It shouldn't be as I pay for a lot of bandwidth!

    Re: Same IP Address!

In answer to the OP there are a couple of possible reasons.

The forum registers the IP address and retains the information for a time period before dropping it due to inactivity. Before you log in to the site you appear as guest but after login you appear as you! The guest account will not log out until after the inactivity timer ends affectively showing you logged on twice.

Alternatively (as has been noted) you may be behind a router that shares IP address's between a number of computers (NAT). Your IP 195.224.166.158 is a pipex owned number (Pipex are the N3 aggregator partner for Cegedim AFAIK). This is a public IP and will therefore be unique across the internet but it may be shared by other machines on the non internet side. This usually means other computers on your own (private) network.

If you connect via IMSnet (securnet/npanet) on their "intranet" you may share your connection with others on the intranet and so get an IP the same as someone on another site as this is a private network.

Most likely is the first solution. Try loging on then loging off then loging on again but with another user account. For a short period you should see both accounts in the online list with the same IP.

Well, all kinds of useful info there. I'm actually able to tell what people are viewing, so if it happens again I'll just notice what is happening, and compare it with what I was doing just before logging on.

    Thanks for that.

Yes I seem to remember that Pipex supply the N3 for the cegedim systems.

Three people on 195.224.166.158 (including me) today, and the other two looking at stuff I hadn't. Connection dead slow (cegedim) as usual.

    ....just my opinion
