    Doxycycline & Furosemide

Saw an Rx today for both of these... Dr had written on it 'stop taking furosemide while on doxycycline'... Searched everywhere but couldn't find a reason why? Anybody able to shed some light on this for me?

    General interactions

    Tetracyclines + Diuretics
It has been recommended by some that the concurrent use of tetracyclines and diuretics should be avoided because of their association with rises in blood urea nitrogen levels.

Above from Stockley...nothing specific, but could be to do with this????

BNF and SPC don't list this as anything to be worried about

Cheers for that! my BNF tells me that 'manufacturer of lymecycline advises avoid concomitant use with diuretics'... It's a puzzler!

Also bleepholder, you don't half give bad answers for someone who 'failed their pharmacy degree' and who has 'multiple accounts'. Haha. Sorry, found that funny. If it is true (which, I heavily doubt), your clinical knowledge (and half a Pharmacist's knowledge is knowing WHERE to find the right answer) is better than a lot of Pharmacist's I've had the pleasure of working with.

but then why taking doxycylcine and avoid diuretics ??
no other alternatives ? i believe other antibiotics would also help
i don't think it is good , if some people is relying on the water tablets.

like was stated previously, because of the association with rises in blood urea nitrogen levels.

doesn't look like it could be sinsister, and since the doxyxycline(i'ma ssuming) is for a short course, then i personally wouldn't worry about it

as to other antibiotics- depends on what they are treating, and i agree about the reliance on water tablets....omitting a few days could send the patient into pulmonary oedema
