Hostacortin H? Not listed in BNF.

Google reveals that this product is simply prednisolone. Appears to be an Indian brand name.

Dear All
from: Ovulation After Glucocorticoid Suppression of Adrenal Androgens in the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Is Not Predicted by the Basal Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate Level -- Azziz et al. 84 (3): 946 -- Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolismnumber of investigators have noted a beneficial effect of glucocorticoid administration on ovulation. The use of corticosteroid suppression for the treatment of ovulatory dysfunction was first reported in 1953
Might u help me please???? That is mean we should not give Hostacortin H for women with ovulatory dysfunction.
Best Wishes.
P.S. Do please, I do not know what is the BNF?? Thank u
from: Diagnosis and treatment of nonclassic (late-onset) congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to CYP21A2 (21-hydroxylase) deficiencyFor women with nonclassic CYP21A2 deficiency with anovulatory cycles who desire fertility, we suggest glucocorticoids as initial therapy for ovulation induction (Grade 2C). In women who do not ovulate with glucocorticoid therapy alone, we suggest adding clomiphene citrate (Grade 2C). (See "Women" above).
FHA - Induction of ovulation with combined glucocorticoid and clomiphene citrate therapy in a minimally hirsute woman - Article SummaryA very minimally hirsute anovulatory woman uho had failed to ovulate with 200 mg clomiphene citrate for five days had a successful ovulation and pregnancy with 150 mg clomiphene citrate plus glococorticoids for five days.
I am waitting your comments

1) British National Formulary
2) Your question is more specialist medical than pharmaceutical.
3) This is a pharmacy forum, not medical.
4) Suggest you contact a Gynae/obstetrics medical forum.
Do not believe we have anyone on this forum who works in such a unit.

Let's put it simply. If you're a woman with high androgens levels, due to for example adrenal hyperplasia, you'll have trouble to ovulate with Clomiphene alone. A steroid is given to block production of extra androgens and help with the ovulation.
The trial that used prednisone went for 5mg at night (?) throughout the whole cycle. If you get the egg produced in one cycle, 5mg a day for 28 or so days is not a big deal as long there's no CI. Just wean your patient off slowly.
Now, who are you? The job of inducing ovulation should be left to specialists (endocrinologist or gynaecologist).
Brilliant answer, I think we may be calling on your knowledge again.

I am a pharmacist, but all women who come to me would like to know why they will take Hostacortin at bed time???
Doctors never give them any chance to ask...
If I would like to know to be more and more aware wth the role of every drug in the prescription, I think the pharmacist should know at least for himself.
Thank You
