Question Paediatrics – know it all?

Hey ppl

Paediatrics is a specialist area. There are many things to consider such as:

1. Formulation – is it palatable for the child?
2. Dosing – children cannot be treated as little adults.
3. Compliance
4. Unlicensed medicines often used
5. Children handle drugs differently to adults.
6. A lack of evidence for medicines in children
7. Feeds that need to be given in between
8. Managing medicines at school

Can anyone recommend a good website, textbook, or course they have used to improve their paediatric knowledge…..??

Any other information you would like to share about paediatrics?

Childrens BNF?

Medicines in school can be a nightmare. Used to have to design "acceptable" schemes for anaphylaxis (and other things). Because of the "independence" of schools used to have to re-negotiate with each school.

In response to your thread title - No!

One of my diploma modules was peads. As the lecturers said, paediatrics is not just one subject - it would be like teaching 'adults'.

Some of the things that you have to think about formulation-wise is astonishing. For example, the old fallback of 'dissolve one tablet in 10ml of water and take x mls x times a day' is not very accurate at all. You need to go back to the BP monograph with the drug solubility data to decide if thats ok with a given drug.

A good knowledge of formulation and pharmaceutics is quite important.

Lots of interesting stuff to to get the grey matter working!

Totally agree – Paediatrics is really interesting….

Just finishing the CPPE assessments on Child and Adolescent health……

Would love to get involved in the ‘Formulation’ side of things…

Obtaining drug histories for children would be a lot more tricky…..

Co I was working for was Danish. They introduced an antibiotic syrup but flavoured it according to adult testers. Used chocolate mint. Kids hated it.

When working at flaovour co we supplied banana, orange, strawberry as main flavours for children's medicines.

Thanx John

That’s sounds really interesting….I would love to have a go at making new flavours for children’s medicines…maybe apple, cranberry, vanilla
