    Re: "Alternative" Customers

I think I've waited on a fair few transexuals in my time, but perhaps I'm unusual in that I've been quite good friends with several.

Dominic Davies, in his ground-breaking book "Pink Therapy" says that the rate-limiting step in getting to know people with different sexualities and genders, is to try and think of them in terms of their sexuality, NOT in terms of their gender.

So there are men who dress as women (Transvestite) yet who remain as male (perhaps bisexual males, but still male) and "women born in men's bodies" (who may or may not have had the op, etc) who certainly come across as female.

There are correspondingly males trapped in female bodies also.

Because of their experiences in life, and their need to understand themselves, get their therapy done, keep their heads straight, they are usually very psychologically aware and high-functioning people.
    ....just my opinion

So WTF don't you call her Julia? Is it really that difficult to pronounce - or do you just enjoy upsetting patients?

Our customer DOES have a problem with his given name of Beverley, so we call him by his chosen name.
    Each to their own.

Boys are Francis, girls are Frances, Boys are Leslie girls are Lesley, boys are Ashley (gone with the wind and Corrie) girls are Ashlie.

Therefore Beverley is a boy and Bevelie is a girl, or is it the reverse?

Someone looking for a childs name should know this, 40 years since we did.

I think you mean in terms of their gender identity not their gender--sexuality is who they fancy. Hence the term "transgendered lesbian" for a male to female transsexual who identifies as a woman (gender identity) but fancies women (sexuality).

OK, I can go with that. I was using Dominic's definitions. So we have

    1. Physical body: Gender
    2. Sexuality: Gender identity: "If I had a choice I would be ...... "
    3. Who fancy: preferred partner, who might be of any combination of these variables......

I remember chatting to a lesbian woman about these issues many years ago, and the difficulties of being politically correct in hypermixed company (my phrase) and she reminded me that everyone is different, but some are just a bit more different than others. (homage to G Orwell)
