Ask a Pharmacist Are you thinking of becoming a pharmacist? Before you train for five long years ask other pharmacists what their jobs are really like.

Default Re: Failing Pre-reg year

Is there anyone from the pharmaceutical society in this forum???
Can the pre reg tutor stop us from sitting the exam if he/ she thinks we are rubbish????????????? (in reality I know that i am not stupid but made to feel as one by others). I am very worried and scared to get less than satisfactory in my next appraisal. I can't study because of the anxiety and fear. If our tutor didn't allow us to sit the exam in June, what would happen next, do we have to do a longer pre reg period, although a new pre reg student was employed and will be starting in August?????????
We are working with people who have years of experience and expecting us to work and learn what they' ve been doing for years in few days or we will be called slow or stupid, if we ask questions we are told you should know this you shouldn't ask questions.
Does the society think that after studying 4 years uni we might be monsters and treat patients in a bad way??????????

Hannah, I'm sorry to tell you that the Tutors can do exactly as they like. You must take care not to be chatty or pretty - you will be deemed an air head!
My daughter has just experienced 6 months of hell - and me along with her - and they are making it impossible for her to continue now. The system is massive......slings and arrows of outrageous fortune....and you can't take arms against them.

Please do call the reg dept as suggested by John.
Not sure if there is a "Head Tutor" but someone must be in charge of them?
Someone impartial is needed to get this sorted out.
If necessary - ask them for an appointment to discuss and go down to HQ to see them.
Please, Hannah and pre-reg's mum - do this now.

Is the 39 weeks appraisal the most important one for allowing us to sit the exam?
I think to apply for the pre reg exam we need satisfactory 39 week appraisal plus other documents. Isn't this right? so is the resuls of other appraisal such as 26 weeks not v. important?

This is appalling. Students need constructive, not pointless, criticism. Students are not expected to be perfect, they are there to learn. None of us left college perfect. We needed to learn how to apply our knowledge.

No, AFAIK tutors cannot stop students going for the exam. Maybe advise against it, but that's all

Hannah, Pre-reg (daughter of parent of pre-reg) use the private messaging system to contact one or other of us. I'm certainly willing to be talk on the phone. I haven't spoken to others but I'm sure I'm not alone in posting that.

Latest news is that she has finally managed to transfer to hospital following positive feedback from 4 wk cross sector placement - hospital pharmacists have been fantastically supportive. She can only have her first shot at the exam Sept rather than June so may miss out on jobs going this July - and might not even pass it first time! but qualifying is main thing after living with horrendous stress of failure for 6 months. PDA also really helpful and would have supported her had she met yet more resistance and needed them to effect the move. Also her Uni helped via phone calls to right people and we got lots of advice off the Forum - thanks to Titch, Admin, The Old Merlin, Jeff,Ymdawd, etc etc - feel like friends now via private messaging! Please continue support to all other posters on subject of terrible experiences of pre-reg year. Be great to here from someone who had a good one!

Unhappy Re: Failing Pre-reg year

Good to hear her good news. I wish her luck.
Can one pre registration tutor have two trainees at the same time?
I am wondering if any tutor would give me a placement to finish my pre reg year. I don't feel that I can continue with my placement at the moment.
Please could you send me a private message if you can help me with this.
(How long does it take for a pharmacist to apply and get approval for becoming a tutor?)

Many thanks.
