PPI's are more potent antisecretory drugs for reflux disease, ulcer treatment and prophylaxis. Cimetidine is also subject to a lot of drug interactions (fewer with PPI's).

Tagamet was the original and became a block buster. There was a rumour that it masked the symptoms of stomach cancer and there were also rumours of Omeprazole promoters 'buying' gastro depts in hospitals. Losec soon became a massive block buster. I remember Lansoprazole being introduced and the rep saying 'only cost £36 a month'. I was trying to sell a treatment costing £3 month and getting Drs moaning about that cost. So, I got hold of some Magnesium Trisilicate Compound Tablets and if a Dr raised cost of my treatment, pointed out that if he got a pt onto mag trisil initially, one month's saving in cost would pay for a year of my product. Unfortunately, after some success, Mag trisil stopped due to low demand and licence cost.
Still, my increased sales showed up on IMS stats and got me some praise.
