Are pharmacists allowed access to patients medical records?

I was just wondering whether community pharmacists were allowed to view patients medical history? (and what does it look like? is it just a list of previous medication, allergies that sort of stuff?)

Chemists could be given access to patient data | Mail Online

The link was posted in 2009 but I can't seem to find whether it has taken effect?
    Thank You.

Medical History includes data such as diagnostic tests, symptoms and diagnoses. Hospital visits and appointment outcomes.
Currently pharmacists have no access to patients medical history although they have access to the records of medicines previously dispensed by their pharmacy.

When the Electronic prescription service is running and pharmacists are able to access the NHS data spine they may be given access to a Summary Care Record. This is not a complete medical history and can be filtered by role (ie A consultant may be able to see the whole history but a pharmacist will only see prescribing history for instance)

Doctors are not keen to upload their surgery data to the summary care record so this is a contentious issue in itself.

Most patients seem to assume we have access anyway.

"This prednisolone the Dr's given me..... what's it for?"

"Could be any one of about a thousand things. What've you got?"

Having just read that Daily Mail article and the readers' comments below it on their site, I am now shaking with anger at the way these people regard pharmacists.

It isn't worth getting annoyed at the attitude of Daily Mail readers, or other uninformed people.
Sometimes you just have to shrug your shoulders, feel sorry for them, and hope for their sake that they don't get sick and find out how the system really works, or rather doesn't work.

The only useful purpose the Daily Mail serves, is when you run out of toilet roll...

I quite like reading it to laugh at how arrogant yet stupid some people are. I never take it seriously mind you, and would never buy it myself!
