It's something you will just get used to. I felt the same way when I started, and used to get upset because I thought I was starting a career. Now I just see it as a job. I still do my best, help people when I can etc, but just see it as a way of making a living. I've been disappointed far too many times now, so just let it go over my head. I don't expect anything, so am never disappointed.

Whatever you do, DO NOT TELL THE PATIENT THAT THE DOCTOR HAS MADE A MISTAKE
I think it is very very necessary, to Patients, to Pharmacists, and to Doctors.

I had a script the other day for oxybutinin liquid, 2.5mg/5ml, take 3 teaspoonfuls tds, for a 11 year old. 3mg tds I could understand, but 7.5mg tds is high for an adult, let alone a child. Got in touch with the surgery, and surprise surprise it should have been 5ml tds.

That's OK, I had a script last year for an 84-year old male diabetic patient for Ocytocin injections that should have been Oxycontin!
Over the Easter Bank holiday weekend, I had one for 200ml paracetamol susp. 500mg/5ml for a 9-week old baby, half a spoonful every 6 hours, and
one for Nozinan injections, 125mg to be given over 24 hours via syringe-driver, that should have read 12.5mg/24hrs...

I was going through the owings this friday. There was an owing for glibenclamide 5mg 2BD. I checked the records, and this was the third month that the patient was having this dispensed. As this pharmacy is run by locums, it means that probably three different pharmacists had dispensed it.

I called the surgery to log the query it, I think that probably the doctor wanted gliclazide instead of glibeclamide (once a day dosage, max. 15mg a day). After waiting a few hours and then calling back, I was told that I should tell the patient that the GP wanted to book a medication review, but she could finish this course because if it hadn't harmed her yet, it would be unlikely to do happen anything in the next couple of weeks. Oh!, I didn't speak with the doctor, this was the message passed by the recepcionist.

Today in sunday rota received following for a ten year old:

Rynanorm nasal drops

and cetirizine syrup 22mls
5ml od.

Script dated saturday,

we were just closing and OOH so did not check with Dr as script was computer generated.

I looked in vain for Rynanorm drops. Not on computer or in Martindale, realise now he may have meant rynacrom but why did'nt computer have correct spelling.

gave and endorsed 200ml pack of cetirizine syrup.

johnep

In the end said we could not identify

If they were of the 'alternative' type they may have asked their doctor to prescribe 'Rhinodoron nasal spray' - which, by a process of miscommunication, became rynadorm drops. It's just a saline nasal spray, as far as i can remember, available from Weleda.
