Mobile phone upgrade

so i think i'm down to a decision depending if orange can give me the htc desire for free on my current contract, fingers crossed..online shop isn't letting me....an alternative is the sony ericsson Xperia X10. looks and sounds good, but only downside is the android operating system runs at v1.6 and not the latest v2.1 as on the htc phones

Is this a massive difference for someone who wants to use the net for emails, news and social networking and odd video on youtube, is the 1.6 enough or should i push for the biggest and baddest version of 2.1???

well people, the deal is done and dusted...htc desire it is..being delivered friday!! took 2 phone calls after the first woman wouoldn't do the upgrade and seemed quite happy i would be looking elsewhere...2nd woman very friendly!!

Just got to work out how to work it when it arrives!!

Today decided to switch on my mobile. Two texts arrived, one from Orange re special offer, the offer was called 'Simcard Update'
from what looked like Iz9. I think could be sinister. Any ideas?
I did not open it or delete.
