    Steam and trains

Love watching the train progs on Discovery and how the Welsh trains were the inspiration for those in America. Just a technical point. Water to steam is just a way of producing a gas under pressure, rather than having cylinders of compressed air. What volume of steam is produced from say, one gram of water? Are there other liquids that produce large volumes of gas from a liquid -- mercury perhaps?

Probably, but water is cheap and it doesn't matter much about the waste product venting.
It would probably turn out that it is the ideal medium - doesn't water have some odd properties at boiling point due to h-bonding and such?

Now with mercury that would be different!

Looked both up and the latter is simply Boyle's law. Wiki gives 1ml water = 1,600mls steam. So now I know. Just wonder if any other given mass gives larger volume.

My car is 1600cc so would require 1ml water per rev. At 2,000 rpm would consume 2ltrs a minute. Wonder what a Stanley steamer would do to the gallon of water.

Why not try some Stirling engine experiments in your retirement.
    These engines are fascinating.
I'm wondering if the temp difference between the living room (20C and outside -6C) is enough to do any useful work?
