Ciutadella, menorca. Lovely old spanish town to walk around.

Tangiers, Morocco. A totally different experience. A completely different sort of city to see.

Madrid, spain. A really compact city centre well worth a walk around - especially the royal palace areas and the egyptian monuments given to them from the sudan dam project.

Granada, Spain. As solly said earlier, the alhambra palace is beautiful to walk around and they produce some of the finest filigree silver jewellry in the world there.

    South America,
Sailing up the Amazon drinking daiquiris on the bow in moonlight as the dolphins play.
Elizabeths house in Laticia . It's on stilts in the Amazon - access by wooden bridges.
Check out the people you meet on the way - they make great guides to the unusual, the illegal and the immoral.
I like border towns - the villains on one side of the border are often the respectable set on the other side - so if you're game for a bit of adventure life can be quite exciting.

But if you're in South America you might as well take the hike to Machu Picchu which in itself is beautiful.
It used to involve jumping off a moving train- camp the final night just above the city. Watching the sun come up over the old city is a permanent image - and getting down and in to explore it while it's empty for a couple of hours before the tourist train arrives is special.

    North America -
The Big Sur - stop off at the Essalen Centre and see if you can blag your way into use of the hot baths one night - strip off relax with a loved one in the bath indulge in a glass of wine and enjoy the stars reflecting off the sea.

    Africa
Cross the Sahara - the starlight is exceptional - the Toureg and camel trains romantic, the tea long in coming and then very sweet. Stop for a couple of days in the middle of nowhere - the emptiness is as close to a religious understanding that I have ever achieved. Travel back via the Bandriaga Escarpment. Pay a child to be your guide once you get there.
Tangala game reserve - South Africa
A trip back in time - no electricity - four poster beds covered with mosquito nets - chat around an open fire - hot water courtesy of a very old stave outside your chalet -and the usual assortment of big African animals for you to find on the game drives.

    Australia -
Sydney harbour is spectacular - probably better than San Francisco or Rio.
Ayers rock did nothing for me - but Katherine Gorge is beautiful. The Hills (Blue mountains - I think they call them) has a sanctuary for ageing hippies called Nimbin - again it's a case of having to blag yourself a place to stay - not too difficult though.
Australia might be famous for Kangaroos and Koala bears - but the really attractive creatures are the possums - they are like living teddy bears.

Singapore - Sue Lees crash pad ($5 a night - complete with Squash court) Interspersed with Raffles (Sue Lee rated that a great idea) - the Presidential Suite used by the likes of Kennedy and Monroe was only $100 a night.

    Malasia - The Cameron Highlands.

Ko Samui - was overrun by tourists in the 70's - Nowadays I'd check further afield for a quieter island - mushroom omelettes recommended - they made the moon take on a different aspect.

If you find yourself near the river Kwai - rent a house boat and live in it for a while - a fishing line over the side provides food, and the boat owners cousin will come round and cook it for you - her husband/son/brother will help sail it to some of the riverside temples if you fancy more activity - lots of steps up to the temples.
Experience tells me that this was a relatively safe place to indulge in illegal substances - bearing in mind that they have the death penalty if you get caught.

That enough to be going on with?

    Jeff

quite an old thread....but anyway....some amazing travelling stories up there

for me it woyuld have to be:

canada- travelling through the rockies and doing a bit of white water rafting in alberta
malta- the whole island and then heading over to the island of gozo and cycling across to the azure window
singapore- hawker centres, cheap food, being able to eat food at any time of the day, the singapore sling at raffles hotel, it was just a shame i missed the grand prix by a matter of a week but next time hey!

Most breathtaking place I have visited was the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. You see it all the time on post cards, etc. but it literally amazes you. Be prepared to pay a lot more for the entrance fee if you're not Indian tho (or if you can't speak Urdu which my parents can luckily).
